Appendix A: Scope, Method, and Claim Boundaries
Working research question
Under what conditions does stress arise from anticipating that important demands may exceed available coping resources, and where does that account stop explaining the experience?
Conclusion of the investigation
Stress does not always arise from fear of crisis. The evidence supports a narrower possibility: one form of psychological distress can intensify when a consequential demand is appraised as likely to strain or exceed available coping resources, particularly under uncertainty or low control. The reviewed studies do not estimate how frequently this pattern explains distress across populations.
Scope
This draft examines five overlapping areas:

Appendix B: Claim Audit
Claim 1: Every stress response reflects fear of an approaching crisis
Status: Rejected as a universal account. Confidence: High.
Stress biology includes physical, physiological, and psychosocial adaptation that does not require conscious fear or a predicted crisis (STRS-001). Crisis-shaped anticipation can explain only a bounded form of psychological distress.
Claim 2: Distress can intensify when anticipated demands may exceed coping resources
Status: Supported as a bounded possibility. Confidence: Medium.
Perceived-stress theory and challenge–threat research support the relevance of the demand–resource balance (STRS-004, STRS-009, STRS-010). Anticipatory-appraisal research supports the broader relevance of appraisal but does not isolate perceived resource insufficiency as its mechanism (STRS-006). The evidence does not estimate frequency or establish a single universal causal path.
Claim 3: Modeled uncertainty can track acute subjective and autonomic stress responses
Status: Supported in a bounded laboratory context. Confidence: Medium.
The de Berker experiment found that a probability-derived measure of irreducible uncertainty tracked subjective stress and autonomic measures during probabilistic shock (STRS-008). It did not establish an effect independent of estimated shock probability. Generalization to chronic or real-world uncertainty remains unresolved.
Claim 4: Low control and social evaluation are consequential properties of acute psychological stressors
Status: Supported. Confidence: High for acute laboratory cortisol response; Medium outside that scope.
Dickerson and Kemeny’s meta-analysis found the largest and most persistent cortisol responses when social-evaluative threat and uncontrollability were combined (STRS-007). This does not establish that all uncontrollable events produce the same response.
Claim 5: Anticipatory stress always takes the form of fear
Status: Rejected. Confidence: High within the construct definitions used here.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) distinguishes responses to imminent acute threat from responses to potential harm that is distant, ambiguous, or uncertain, while the predictable–unpredictable threat protocol provides an experimental counterpart (STRS-002, STRS-003, STRS-005). Anticipation can therefore involve sustained potential threat without the immediacy associated with fear.
Claim 6: Anticipatory appraisal is associated with cortisol response
Status: Supported in a narrow sample. Confidence: Medium.
Gaab et al. found that the four appraisal scales together predicted cortisol response, with reported adjusted R-squared of .35 and .22. Threat and challenge independently predicted the two outcomes in the joint models; ability and control did not. Ability’s significant bivariate association means this is not an absence of every association. The findings do not isolate expected coping failure as a cause.
Claim 7: All stress indicates expected coping failure

Adaptive mobilization and challenge are counterexamples (STRS-001, STRS-009, STRS-010). People can experience arousal and effort while expecting resources to be sufficient.
Claim 8: Reappraisal eliminates stress

In the Jamieson experiment, reappraisal altered cardiovascular response and one comparison on attentional bias but did not eliminate reported stress or remove the task demand (STRS-009).
Claim 9: Subjective and physiological stress measures are interchangeable
Status: Rejected as a measurement assumption. Confidence: Medium.
The de Berker study measured several response channels on different timescales. Its cortisol sampling verified stress induction but was too sparse to test the fast trial-by-trial relationship measured through subjective and autonomic responses (STRS-008). This supports keeping the measures distinct; it does not establish a broad dissociation between felt and physiological stress.
Claim 10: Separating present harm from anticipated coping failure can clarify what kind of response is needed
Status: Interpretive extension. Confidence: Medium.
The evidence supports separating present demand, resources, uncertainty, control, and appraisal. Applying those distinctions to determine whether someone needs protection, information, material resources, recovery, or another response is an interpretation developed by the essay, not a validated clinical instrument.

Appendix D: Counterevidence and Excluded Accounts
Excluded: Every stress response is fear
Stress biology includes adaptation to physical and physiological demands without conscious fear. The essay now treats the demand–resource thesis as one possible form of psychological distress, without making a frequency claim.
Excluded: Every stressor is an approaching crisis
This account is excluded because crisis is not necessary for stress. Treating every stressor as a crisis would erase physical demand, adaptive mobilization, and ordinary effort.
Excluded: Anticipatory stress always involves imminent danger
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) construct definitions and predictable–unpredictable threat research distinguish imminent danger from potential harm that is distant, ambiguous, or uncertain.
Excluded: Cortisol proves fear
Cortisol is one component of a stress-response system, not a direct or unique measure of fear. The active evidence uses different measures and sampling times; it does not establish a general divergence between cortisol and subjective or autonomic response.
